Despite the fact that it has been more than 250 years since the time of Benjamin Franklin’s famous lightning experiment, the phenomenon of lightning is still not well-understood. Most people recognise the behaviour of lightning as being random, unpredictable and potentially very dangerous and damaging. There are many relatively straightforward measures that can be put in place to mitigate the consequences of a lightning strike to a structure, facility or site. Some of these measures are considered to be a “black art” because, in general, they are poorly understood. Furthermore, it is not commonly recognised that so-called “indirect strikes” can cause damage and downtime. So, whilst the probability of a direct strike may be low, this does not mean that the overall risk is low.
